About the Photographer

Guelph based Photographer and Photojournalist Kyle Rodriguez took the long way to embarking on his profession, but there were signs of heading that direction early on. He was fascinated by cameras as a kid, becoming the one who took the photos with a 110 film point and shoot when he and his friends were growing up.

He got his first real SLR camera in second year of university - a 35mm Pentax Spotmatic II from a friend's father in trade for a bottle of scotch, and immediately began shooting images around Peterborough , Ontario. Best trade ever made as far as he is concerned.

After completing an Honors BA in Political Studies and English, followed by another Honors BA in Philosophy at Trent University, Kyle took some time to travel across Europe, and later to India where he made some of his favorite images.

Kyle found his passion shooting sports for the University of Guelph as a graduate student and editor of the Features section of the student paper.

"In sports there's no time for self consciousness - the athlete either performs or fails. It's the intensity of that tension I try to find," says Kyle. "The game may have been played on this court a thousand times, but what I love is the human element that makes each and every play a moment as unique as the people involved.

"It's the epic and mythical narrative quality I love to represent, be it in my sports photography, weddings, portraits, editorial, or commercial work."

In 2007 Kyle was named the first instructor of the photojournalism component of the University of Guelph's innovative new Diploma in Agricultural Communications.

"One thing that my formal schooling has developed is an ability to relate to people, and identify meaningful things we find in everyday life, hopefully bringing those elements together in ways that are important to the viewer for years to come...

Something you can treasure as an artifact for life.
